Waking up the Fields

There has been a bit of tractor work taking place on the farm this past week.
The alfalfa plants are still "sleeping" but the weeds are starting to make an appearance.
Hayman has been out with the John Deere aerating and harrowing the pivots.
Aerating opens up the top layer of soil and helps the alfalfa plants to wake up from their winter slumber.
The harrow is used to smooth out the field and flatten the mounds of dirt left by the gophers.
The aerator is the yellow piece of equipment in the photo.
The harrow is hooked on by chains and pulled along behind.
The smell of freshly worked soil hit me full force when I stepped out of the car to take these photos, reminding me that spring is very close at hand.
It is just a matter of weeks now before green will begin appearing in the now winter brown fields!

I am participating in Farm Friend Friday hosted by Verde Farms.

Those photos are awesome. I love the smell of fresh turned earth. We are just ending our winter so will be a couple of months yet. B

I thought I recognized those mountains. I used to live in Las Vegas....graduated from Rancho. Waking up alfalfa takes a lot of work. Glad 2 C U here.

Oooh! I bet that earthy smell was wonderful. All winter the earth is sealed and scentless beneath a layer of crust.
I had no idea that alfalfa was a perennial. For some reason I thought fields had to be replanted year after year.

What a great sign of spring! There is nothing like getting outside and actually doing things after a long winter.
