We have an over population of ground squirrels in our valley.
This as attracted the attention of the hawks.
There are a fair number of them now planted firmly on posts bordering the hay fields.
They are on constant watch for the movement of the fuzzy, fat brown ground squirrels.
On Thursday morning, on my way out of the valley, I counted 20 hawks staked out on various fence posts.
The hawks are not easy to photograph.
They tend to take flight when you get to close to them.
I found these two were willing to sit a bit for a photo or two.
They were watching me as closely as I was watching them.
And then...they took flight.
In search of their next meal I presume.

Their tendency to take the high spot to look helped Dad to trap predators from stealing our chickens. He would place a high post in the chicken run and attach a trap, Although this seems cruel, it saved our chickens.
Wonderful! Absolutely wonderful!
Yay for the hawks! I detest ground rodents and ground squirrels. They dig dangerous holes and chew important stuff, like electric wires.
As long as they stay away from the chickens and have enough rodents to eat, it's all good.
Great pics!

My neighbor raises hawks and uses them to hunt. They are the coolest ever. NGL - they freak me out slightly when he takes their hoods off, but they are beautiful birds
